Organized 1845 by a group of young men of German descent….Emanu-El was the third "Reform" synagogue in America, the first two being in Charleston, South Carolina, and Har Sinai Verein in Baltimore." Previously: first services, private dwelling, Grand & Clinton Strs., purchased & remodelled brick church, 56 Chrystie Street (1847-1854), remodelled church E 12 (1854-1868), erected temple, 43rd & 5th (1868-1927). Present temple erected 1029. "Consolidated with Temple Beth El 1927 and reincorporated May 17, 1927 as Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York. "Temple is often referred to as "The Cathedral Synagogue of America." Burial: "General meeting of the Cultus Verein, held on April 6, 1845, organizing the congregation. Burial ground purchased May 26, 1845, consisting of 4 lots at corner of Grand Street an Bushwick Ave., Williamsburgh...In 1851 Emanu-El purchased 25 acres of land in East New York, located on Jamaica Plank Road, Brooklyn, for a Cemetery.
